Berkeley is a mid-sized urban city in northwestern Alameda County in the Berkeley Hills, at an average elevation of around 200 feet above sea level (from sea level to over 500 feet).   It has been a university town since the founding of the University of California.   Berkeley was incorporated on 4 April 1878, and the first Charter was adopted 5 March 1895.   It is considered one of the most liberal, and sometimes radical, city in California.   Berkeley currently has a population of about 102,743 people (2000).   Berkeley citizens are composed of 59.2% Caucasians, 9.7% Hispanics, 16.4% Asian, and 13.6% Black.   The median household income for Berkeley residents is $87,033 and the per capita income is $30,477.   Berkeley is home to the main campus of the University of California, as well as erkeley City College.   About 64.3% of Berkeley residents have earned a bachelor's degree or higher, well over the national average.

The San Francisco Bay is situated to the west and the Berkeley Hills to the east.   Four highways pass through Berkeley, Interstates 80 and 580, and State Routes 13 (Ashby Ave.) and 123 (San Pablo Ave.).   Additional information about Berkeley can be found at Berkeley Info and at the Official Berkeley site.
