Manhole Covers of Truckee, California

Truckee is a small city in the Sierra Nevada high country at an elevation of 5,814 feet above sea level, in eastern Nevada County, at the junction of Interstate 80 and State Routes 89 and 267.   Truckee was founded in 1863, but was not incorporated until 1993.   It is named after a Paiute Indian guide (pronounced something like "Tro-kay", which actually meant, "everything is all right", and his name was Winnemuca), who assisted emigrants over Donner Pass in 1844.   It also held the names Pollard's Station (1866), Coburn's Station (1865), Gray's (Toll) Station (1863), for the Central Pacific Railroad depot at Truckee.

Logging was the primary industry supporting the Truckee economy in the 1800s.   Truckee was located on a major travel route for emigrants from the east, with the famous Donner Party passing through Truckee (though not yet founded at that time).   Truckee is still found on a major transportation corridor between California and points east, with I-80 and the Union Pacific Railroad passing through town.   Situated just north of Lake Tahoe, Truckee is an important destination point, or stopping point, for tourists visiting this region both in the winter and summer.   Today, the majority of employment is in the tourism services industry.

The natural vegetation in the Truckee area is primarily Mixed Conifer Forest.   Dominant species include: Jeffery and Ponderosa Pines (Pinus jeffreyi and P. ponderosa, respectively), Incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens), White Fir (Abies concolor), Red Fir (Abies magnifica), and Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii).   The Truckee River, which drains Lake Tahoe, flows through Truckee on its way eastward into Reno, then north to Pyramid Lake, where it terminates.   The Truckee River is a major water source for the Reno metropolitan area.

Truckee has a population of 14,930 (2003 est.), composed of about 88.4% White, 12.8% Hispanic, 1% Asians, and 0.6% Native American residents.   The median family income is $58,848 and the per capita income is $26,786.   Of the Truckee residents over 25 years old, 33% hold a batchelor's or higher degree.   A small percentage of people commute to work to the Tahoe Basin or Reno, Nevada area from Truckee.   On average, working Truckee residents have a commute time of 23 minutes, indicating that most residents work in or near Truckee.   Additional information about Truckee can be obtained from the Truckee Info site or from Official Town of Truckee site, and the history of Truckee is nicely told at History of Truckee Area site.
