Costa Rica (rich coast) has a population of about 3 million people, with San Jose, the capitol, at around 300,000 people. San Jose is located in the Meseta Central (Central Valley), which results in a significant smog problem. Traffic is quite congested. San Jose has numerous neigbhorhoods, as indicated on the map below. The mean temperature in the Central Valley is 72 degrees, with humidity high. Coffee plantations surround the city, and high tech business now ranks first for the Costa Rican economy.

Photos of Scenes from in and around San Jose

Map of the western part of the City of San Jose

The Costa Rican flag

Daybreak and early evening view of the central valley area north of San Jose

City shopping mob in downtown San Jose, a week before Christmas

Another mob scene, and our Mercedes tour bus

National Theater in downtown San Jose

National Museum in downtown San Jose, a former army barracks and armory, complete with bullet holes from the civil war of 1949, afterwhich the Costa Rican army was disbanded. Costa Rica does not have an army.

Our Caravan tour director, Karina Ramirez, describing the stone spheres that were created by aboriginal Costa Ricans, and here favorite gold statuary (very small).

Interesting floor within the National Museum, and a railroad siding next to the museum

National Museum guard tower (former army barracks and armory) and entrance ticket

Nighttime view from the Barcelo Palacio Hotel north of the city (near Alajuela)

A coffee plantation on the south slopes of Volcan Poas, north of San Jose

Coffee plants, with ripe cherries, growing in full sun on this plantation

Immigrant field hands, and their entire families, harvesting coffee beans. Many of the immigrants in Costa Rica come from neighboring Nicaragua

A potential buyer inspects the coffee bean harvest. Will the coffee from these beans be good enough?

The coffee plantation inspectors seem pleased (with the coffee plantation, or themselves?)
