Manhole Covers of Auburn, California
Auburn is a small city in Placer County, first incorporated in 1860 and again in 1888 (maybe they didn't do it right the first time).   It is the county seat.   Auburn, a Gold Rush era town, has a population of about 12,462.   Auburn claims to be the "Endurance Capital of the World", due most likely to the fact that it hosts an Iron Man race.   It was first settled in 1848.   The population is made up of 93% Whites and 6% Hispanic residents.   The median family income of Auburn citizens is $62,250 and the per capita income is $26,258.   Similar to other Sierra Nevada foothill communities, Auburn's natural vegetation consists of Foothill Pine-Oak Woodland. Interstate 80 and State Route 49 pass through Auburn.   The Central Pacific Railroad came to Auburn in 1865.   Tourism is probably the largest industry supporting Auburn.   Most of its working residents commute to the Sacramento area.   It is on average at an elevation of 1,300 feet above sea level.   Additional information about Auburn, California can be found at Auburn Info and at a City of Auburn History site, and many other places.
