Manhole Covers of Camarillo, Ventura County, California
Camarillo is a small rural city in southern Ventura County at the eastern end of the Oxnard Plain, and includes the Camarillo Hills, at an average elevation of 70 feet above sea level.   The City of Camarillo, was incorporated in 1962 or 1964 (source are in conflict over this), and currently has a population of about 57,077 people (2000), composed of 80.7% Whites, 15.5% Hispanics, and 7.2% Asians.
Camarillo was originally settled by the Chumash Indians, who where largely replaced by Spanish emigrants under Spanish colonization, with a land grant issued by the Mexican government to Jose Ruis in 1847, Rancho Calleguas, who later sold it to Juan Camarillo.   Juan's two sons Adolfo and Juan Camarillo, established the small town on their Rancho, to whom the city is named for.   Camarillo is the home of a 3M manufacturing plant, and was home of Oxnard Air Force Base, which closed in the early 1970s, and is now Camarillo Airport.   (I learned to drive large trucks on the runway through Oxnard College before the airport reopened after the Air Force left.)   Camarillo is mostly a bedroom community and has grown dramatically since the 1970s, paving over some of the best agricultural soil in the world, but not anywhere as much as its neighbor, Oxnard.   About 60% of the employed citizens of Camarillo commute to work outside the city, which takes them about 25 minutes.   The median household income for Camarillo residents is $62,457 and the per capita income is $28,635.   Two highways pass through Camarillo, U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 34.   State Route 118 passed to the north of the city.   Southern Pacific Railroad passes through Camarillo, with a depot established, named Springville.   Camarillo has a nearly perfect climate, with an annual average temperature of 68 degrees F, with a average high temperature of 70.7 degrees F and average low temp. of 49 degrees F.   One of my high school history teachers, John Daly, as once the mayor of Camarillo, way back in 1971.   Additional information about Camarillo can be found at Camarillo Info and at the Official Camarillo site.
The manhole covers in Camarillo are fairly typical in design and style with many southern California cities, with a limited number of designs.   The spider web and diamond grid patterns the the two dominant patterns in Camarillo, with one patternless (smooth) surface design (if you call that a design).   Notice the minor variations in the two basic designs.
