Manhole Covers of Denmark

Created 19 February 2006

This is a study of manhole covers from various cities in Denmark.   Manhole covers were photographed in Copenhagen during the summer of 2003.   I know I have more photos from previous trips in 1992 and 1996; however, they are slides that will have to be dug out of storage and scanned.

Manhole Covers of Denmark

Denmark is a small country in northern Europe adjacent to Germany, but is considered part of Scandinavia.   The Danes spell it, Danmark.   Denmark consists of a peninsula jutting north towards Sweden and Norway (Jutland) bordering both the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.   It includes many islands, most noteably, Zealand, Funen, Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster, and Bornholm.

Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government, and has state-level government and 98 municipalities.   Copenhagen is Denmark's largest city, and is the nation's capital.   Denmark is a member of the European Union (since 1973) but has not joined the Eurozone.   In other words, they maintain their own currency, Danish crowns.   Denmark is one of the founding members of NATO.   Denmark has a mixed capitalistic and socialist economy, and is considered the least corrupt country in the world, and the Danes are considered one of the happiest peoples of the world, and not because they read Hans Christian Andersen's tales all the time, but that doesn' hurt.   Denmark has close cultural ties to Sweden and Norway, and Danish is very closely related to Swedish and Norwegian languages.

Denmark has a population of over 5 million, 90.1% of which are Danes.   Much more can be read about The Kingdom of Denmark here.
