Manhole Covers of Galt, California

The land on which Galt occurs was formerly part of federal land grant, known as the Chabolla Grant, consisting of approximately eight leagues (32,000 acres).   In 1869, Dr. Obed Harvey convinced the Central Pacific Railroad to lay track on his farm, afterwhich he set up a railway stop, which lead to the laying out a grid for the future town of Galt, named for a town on Ontario, Canada.   Galt got started really as a resting spot for freight haulers to the Mother Lode that were taking supplies from New Hope Landing on the Sacramento River a few miles west.   That resting stop was called Liberty and was established by a farmer.   After the railroad was in place, and Liberty was not near them (about a mile away, the town moved to its present location, mostly on the east side of the tracks.
Galt is a small town located in southern Sacramento County.   The southern edge of Sacramento County is just south of Galt along Dry Creek.   It is at an average elevation of 52 feet above sea level.   Galt was founded in 1869, and was incorporated on 16 August 1946.   Wheat was an important crop in the late 1800s, replaced by grapes in the 1900s.   It was considered the agricultural center of the Sacramento Valley for many years, and was the site of the Sacramento County Fair (first held in 1937) until it was moved to the State Fairgrounds in Sacramento in 1954 on Stockton Blvd., and moved again to its current location on Cal Expo in 1969.

Two highways pass through Galt, State Routes 99 and 104.   The old Lincoln Highway passed through Galt, which was a major highway when built.   The average commute time for Galt residents is 31 minutes, indicating that the majority commute to work in the Sacramento area, or south in the Stockton area.

Galt has a population of 22,578 people (2003), consisting of 70.5% Caucasians, 33.2% Hispanic, 1.2% African-American, 1% Native American, and 2.8% Asian.   The median family income of Galt residents is $45,052 and the per capita income is $16,620, which is well below the state and national averages.   Galt residents are not well educated, with only 14% over 25 years old holding bachelor's degrees or higher, well below the state average.   Additional information about Galt can be found at Galt Info, at the Official Galt site, a great site for Galt Facts and Galt History web sites.
