Manhole Covers of Mariposa, Mariposa County, California
Mariposa is a small rural mining (now tourist) community in the Mariposa County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, at an average elevation of around 1,952 feet above sea level.   Mariposa was a Gold Rush town.   Mariposa is the Spanish name for "butterfly", named by Mexican Army Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga who saw a swarm of butterflies along Mariposa Creek in 1806.   Mariposa was founded by John C. Fremont in 1850s, but remained unincorporated.   It is the county seat for Mariposa County.   Mariposa currently has a population of about 1,373 people (2000).   Mariposa citizens are composed of 88.9% Caucasians, 7.8% Hispanics, and 3.5% Native American.   The median household income for Mariposa residents is $34,626 and the per capita income is $18,190.
Mariposa is now known most famously as the all-weather gateway to Yosemite.   Two highways pass through Mariposa, State Routes 49 and 140.   The average commute time for working Mariposa residents is 20 minutes, indicating that a large percentage works out of town.   Mariposa Creek passes through town.   Additional information about Oakhurst can be found at Mariposa Info and at the Official Mariposa site.
I found 9 varieties of covers in Mariposa.
