Oakland is a large urban port city in northwestern Alameda County, and is the 8th largest city in Califoria.   It sites at an average elevation of around 200 feet above sea level (from sea level to over 500 feet).   Oakland is the county seat, was founded in 1852, and incorporated on 4 May 1852.   It is home to the California State Coastal Conservancy and Mills College.   Oakland currently has a population of about 399,484 people (2000).   Oakland citizens are composed of 23.5% Caucasians, 21.2% Hispanics, 15.2% Asian, and 35.7% Black.   The median household income for Oakland residents is $40,055 and the per capita income is $21,936.   About 30.9% of Oakland residents over age 25 have earned a bachelor's degree or higher.
The San Francisco Bay is situated to the west and the Oakland Hills to the east.   Six highways pass through Oakland, Interstates 80, 580, 880, and 980, and State Routes 13 (Warren Freeway) and 24 (Grove Shafter Freeway).   Additional information about Oakland can be found at Oakland Info and at the Official Oakland site.
