This is a study of manhole covers from Wasco, in northwestern Kern County, California.   Wasco is located northwest of Bakersfield, between I-5 and SR99 and calls itself, "Rose Capital of the Nation".

Manhole Covers of Wasco, California

Wasco is a small incorporated farming city on State Routes 43 and 46, between I-5 and SR-99, in the Tulare Basin portion of the San Joaquin Valley, at an elevation of 328 feet above mean sea level.   Wasco has a population of 21,263 (in 2000) and is estimated at 23,874 in 2005, a 12.3% increase.   The residents are 22% White, 67% Hispanic, typical of agricultural towns in the Central Valley.   About 10% of Wasco residents are Black.   The median family income in Wasco is $30,506 and the per capita income is $14,228.   Only 4.2% of Wasco residents have a batchelor's degree or higher.

Wasco is named after Wasco County, Oregon.   Wasco includes the former community of Dewey/Deweyville, which was its original name, changed to Wasco in 1900.   The town was founded in 1897 when the Santa Fe Railroad came through the area. Wasco finally incorporated in 1945.   Roses, almonds, pistachios, sugar beets, grapes, and cotton is the primary crop grown around Wasco.   Wasco has railroad tracks passing through, with its own siding (for the crops). Only 42% of Wasco residents work within the city, and the average commute time for Wasco residents is 23 minutes.   Wasco is served by Amtrak, and is a railroad town.   Hollywood movies, North by Northwest, Son-in-Law, and Frailty were filmed in Wasco.   Additional information about the Wasco can be found at Wasco Info and the official website for Wasco City.
