Manhole Covers of Los Altos, California

Los Altos means, "The High" or "The Heights", in Spanish.   Does that mean it is a good place to get high, or is it refering to "high ground"?   Don't know, and these things are relative.   Los Altos is an affluent bedroom community between San Franciso and San Jose, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, incorporated as a city on 1 December 1952.   The primary reason for incorporation was to have local land use control and prevent annexation by Palo Alto and Mountain View.   Los Altos occupies 7 square miles (but not in a square) of expensive real estate on the San Franciso Peninsula.   Los Altos has a population of 28,976 people (2010), consisting of 70.6% White, 3.9% Hispanic, 0.5% African-American, and 23.5% Asian.   The median household income of Los Altos residents is $154,823 while the median family income is $56,319.   The per capita income is $73,123.   71.3% of Los Altos residents have a Bachelor's degree or higher level of education.   That means that there are a lot of very smart and well-paid people living in Los Altos.

Los Altos is a small-sized community located in the northwestern Santa Clara County, with a rural feel, which is fully intended by the community.   Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) is the dominant, and native, tree of Los Altos, which adds considerably to its character and aesthetics.   It is at an average elevation of 234 feet above sea level.   The climate is moderate yearround, with the average high temperate is around 60 degrees F, and an average low of 48 degrees F.   Average rainfall is about 18 inches.

Two highways pass through Los Altos, I-280 and State Route 82.   US 101 is nearby to the northeast, as well as SR 237.   High-tech jobs in the computer industry have been the primary economic engines of Los Altos.   The average commute time for working Los Altos residents is 22.1 minutes.   Additional information about Los Altos can be found at Los Altos Info and Official City of Los Altos web sites.
