Manhole Covers of San Luis Obispo, California

San Luis Obispo means, "Saint Luis, the Bishop", in Spanish.   A Franciscan mission was established in San Luis Obispo in 1772, with the founding of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa by Father Junípero Serra as the fifth mission in the California chain of 21 missions.   San Luis Obispo really started developing in 1880s with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was incorporated as a charter city on 16 February 1856.   San Luis Obispo occurs at the northern (upper) end of the San Luis Valley.   San Luis Obispo has a population of 44,750 people (2009), consisting of 76.5% White, 14.2% Hispanic, 0.5% African-American, and 5.7% Asian.   The median household income of San Luis Obispo residents is $31,926 while the median family income is $56,319.   This large difference is explained by the large student population in the city.   The per capita income is $20,386.   40.9% of San Luis Obispo residents have a Bachelor's degree or higher level of education.

San Luis Obispo is a small-sized community located in the northern San Luis Obispo County, on the south side of Cuesta Ridge along San Luis Obispo Creek.   It is at an average elevation of 234 feet above sea level.   The climate is warm and dry in the summer, with the average high temperate is 73.3 degrees F, and an average low of 47.4 degrees F.   Average rainfall is 24.4 inches, with an average of 50 rainy days per year.

Three highways pass through San Luis Obispo, U.S. Highway 101 and State Routes 1 and 227.   San Luis Obispo is located south of midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.   Education and government have been the primary economic engines of San Luis Obispo, along with it being a college town for the California Polytechic State University, at San Luis Obispo.   The California National Guard also maintains a facility at Camp San Luis Obispo.   The average commute time for working San Luis Obispo residents is over 15 minutes.   Additional information about San Luis Obispo can be found at San Luis Obispo Info and Official City of San Luis Obispo web sites.
