Manhole Covers of Orangevale, California
The land on which Orangevale occurs was formerly part of Rancho Del San Juan, consisting of approximately 20,000 acres, granted to John Augustus Sutter in 1844 by the Mexican government.   It is located south of the old wagon road to Auburn from Sacramento, which cut diagonally through the original Sacramento County's Central Township when California became a state in September 1850.   Pioneer families established ranches in the Orangevale area in the 1850s.   Citrus was a major crop, as the town's name implies, from the late 1880s until the 1932 killing frost destroyed most of the trees.   Oak trees once dominated the landscape or low rolling hills.
Orangevale (originally Orange Vale) is a small community located in northeastern Sacramento County.   It is at an average elevation of 240 feet above sea level.   Orangevale was founded in 1889 with the building of the Orangevale Open School schoolhouse.   A real estate developer (Trainor & Desmond) bought up large tracks of land and subdivided them into 10-acre plots, and changed the name for marketing purposes to Orangevale.   Aerojet General employed over 19,000 people at its peak in the early 1960s, which provided employment for many Orangevale residents.   Orangevale is not incorporated.   It is east of Sacramento, adjacent to Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, and Folsom.
No state highways pass through Orangevale; however, U.S. Highway 50 passes to the south and Interstate 80 is a few miles to the north.   Orangevale has a population of 26,705 people (2000), consisting of 89.5% Caucasians, 6.8% Hispanic, 1.1% African-American, 1.0% Native American, and 2.5% Asian.   The median family income of Orangevale residents is $43,712 and the per capita income is $31,510.   About 24% of Orangevale residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor's degree or higher.   The average commute time for working Orangevale residents is 27 minutes, indicating that most work in the Sacramento metropolitan area.   Additional information about Orangevale can be found at Orangevale Info and Orangevale History web sites.
