Manhole Covers of Paso Robles, California

Paso Robles (formally, El Paso de Robles) means, "Pass of the Oaks", in Spanish, being so named after the fact that early Spanish explorers found so many Valley Oak (Quercus lobata) and other oak tree species in the area.   It was "established" in 1864 when the first bathhouse was built at the main natural hot spring, followed by the Hotel El Paso de Roblesn in 1891.   Paso Robles really started developing in 1886 with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and was incorporated in 1889.   Paso Robles occurs at the southern (upper) end of the Salinas River Valley.   Paso Robles has a population of 24,297 people (2000), consisting of 75.7% White, 27.7% Hispanic, 3.3% African-American, 1.3% Native American, and 1.9% Asian.   The median household income of Paso Robles residents is $39,217 (for 2000) and the per capita income is $17,974.   17.4% of Paso Robles residents have a Bachelor's degree or higher level of education.

Paso Robles is a small-sized community located in the northern San Luis Obispo County north of the City of San Luis Obispo, on the upper reach of the Salinas River.   It is at an average elevation of 794 feet above sea level.   Is has long been a great place to grow grapes, and has many vineyards and wineries.   The first grapevines where planted in 1797.   The climate is hot and dry in the summer, with the average high temperate at 90 degrees F or higher for 81 days and an average low during the winter of 32 degrees F for 47 days.   Average rainfall is 15.2 inches.

Three highways pass through Paso Robles, U.S. Highway 101 and State Routes 41 and 229, and is located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.   Tourism and agriculture have been the primary economic engines of Paso Robles, with it becoming a bedroom community for the San Luis Obispo Valley.   The average commute time for working Paso Robles residents is over 22 minutes.   Additional information about Paso Robles can be found at Paso Robles Info and Official City of Paso Robles web sites.
