Manhole Covers of Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo County, California

Pismo Beach is a small beach community in southern San Luis Obispo County, on the Pacific Ocean upcoast from Grover Beach and Oceano, and just down coast from Shell Beach, at an average elevation of 66 feet above sea level.   Pismo Beach was started in 1881, founded in 1891, and incorporated in 1946.   Pismo Beach was a railroad stop/farm town that now is mostly supported by tourism, and it got its name from the Native American (Chumash) name for "tar".   Pismo Beach currently has a population of about 8,551 people (2000).   Pismo Beach citizens are composed of 91.4% Caucasians, 6.9% Hispanics, and 2.9% Asians.   The median household income for Pismo Beach residents is $46,396 and the per capita income is $30,835, well above the national average.   About 37% of Pismo Beach residents have a bachelor's degree or higher level education.   Working Pismo Beach residents have an average commute time of 22 minutes.   U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) passes through Pismo Beach.

Pismo Beach's economy is based on tourism, as a beach community.   Pismo Beach is the Clam Capital of the World (and holds a Clam Festival every October), and for which the Pismo Clam is famous for.   Additional information about Pismo Beach can be found at Pismo Beach Info, the Pismo Beach Data site, and Pismo Beach History site.
