Manhole Covers of Stockton, San Joaquin County, California
Stockton, California's Sunrise Seaport, is a large city in San Joaquin County at the east edge of the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta, at the head of the Stockton Slough.   Stockton was founded in 1849 by Charles M. Weber, a German immigrant, who acquired a 49,000-acre Mexican land grant.   It was named in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton.   It was incorporated on 23 July 1850.   Stockton was established as a railroad junctions (Mokelumne Station) in 1869, and incorporated in 1989.   Stockton has a population of about 289,100, and is the 13th largest city in California.   The population is made up of 43.3% Whites, 32.5% Hispanic, 11.3% African-American, 19.9% Asian, and 1.1% Native American residents.   The median family income of Stockton citizens is $40,434 and the per capita income is $15,405.   It is a large city with a divere economy with commercial/industrial employment opportunities, and is growing incredibly fast.   Similar to other San Joaquin Valley communities, Stockton's natural vegetation consists of grassland and vernal pool wetland complexes to the east, and tule marshes to the west, nearly all of which has been converted to urban or agricultural uses.
Interstate 5 and State Routes 4 and 99 pass through Stockton.   Stockton is a seaport, albiet a small port, but ocean-going cargo ships visit stockton on a regular basis, loading primarily agricultural crops such as grains and many fruits.   Some of Stockton's working residents commute to the Bay area.   It is on average at an elevation of 0 to 20 feet above sea level, so in 50 years, it will be under water as a result of global warming.   Additional information about Stockton, California can be found at Stockton Info and at a City of Stockton site.
