Avila Beach is a small rural beach community in the San Luis Obispo County, on the Pacific Ocean upcoast from Pismo Beach and just down coast from Port San Luis, at an average elevation of 15 feet above sea level.   Avila Beach was a fishing town, founded in 1867.   Avila Beach currently has a population of about 937 people (2000), which swells considerably during the summer and warm weekends.   Avila Beach citizens are composed of 71.9% Caucasians, 34.4% Hispanics, and 2.7% Asians.   The median household income for Avila Beach residents is $40,490 and the per capita income is $16,137.   About 21% of Avila Beach residents have a bachelor's degree or higher level education.   About 27% of Avila Beach residents work within the city, with a majority commuting to work, with an average commute time of 20 minutes.  
No state highways pass through Avila Beach, which is served only by one county road connected to U.S. Highway 101.
